Doctorate in Sociology (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 1983) and post-doctorate from MIT/SPURS Program (1993-1994). Taught at the universities: UnB, UFBA, and USP in Brazil; at Princeton and Illinois/Urbana-Champaign in the United States; and at EHESS in France. Works in the fields of gender, age, and race inequality in the market and workplace; the trajectories and experiences of unemployment and seeking employment; care and its forms of work.
